Final Fantasy

Hello all,I've never played any of the Final Fantasy games and I'd like to try one out, I've heard they're amazing. Any recommendations or advice on which ones to play or which ones to stay away from? Also, are all the games connected? Like, is FFVII a sequel to FFVI? Or are all the games standalone? Any input is much appreciated. Thanks. :DFinal Fantasy
The games are all stand-alones, although some have formed their own mini-universes, like VII, XII, XIII, and X.Final Fantasy
Well if you have portable devices you can try 1 and 2 on PSP, 3 and 4 on the DS, 5 and 6 on the GBA, 7-9 on the Playstation are hard to find but IMO are the best and thats where I would start, 10 and 12 are easier to find but 10 is way better than 12.
The games are all stand alone, unless they share their title with another game (like Final Fantasy X-2 is the sequel to X)The best ones are IV, VI, VII, VIII, IX and X.The one I would have the most trouble recomending to you is XII
Buy FFX first, if you don't like turn based ones, try FFXII, it's Totally different from all the others, in story too.
I would also say to try 10. FF games have been like 10 since the beginning. 12 is way different, Crystal Chronicles is way different. Tactics is a tactical games. What kinda consoles do you got because FF is spread all over hell and high water.
I have a DS, PS2, and an Xbox 360. I don't mind turn-based combat at all; the whole reason I wanted to try a Final Fantasy game in the first place is because I played Lost Odyssey and loved it, and I wanted to play a game that was better or at least equally as good as LO, so I started looking into 'em and I noticed that there are more than 20 games, so naturally I was lost. But thanks for the info and recommendations guys, I'll definitely try out X.
Final Fantasy games are all over the board, and while most of them are good in my opinion, they're spread out over a couple different genres and you may always find a couple you don't really like. If you want classic turn-based RPG, you should definitely go with IV, VI, VII, VIII, IX, or X. If you want something more hack-n-slash RPG, you could go with Final Fantasy XII or Crystal Chronicles. If you want tactical RPG, you could go with Final Fantasy Tactics. If you want an interesting spin-off, you could go with one of the Chocobo's Dungeon games or Chocobo Racing. If you want an MMO, you could go with Final Fantasy XI. If you want handheld, you can get basically any Final Fantasy through VI, Crisis Core, or the Final Fantasy Legends games. There's so many different outlets and ventures within the vast Final Fantasy brand that it's hard to suggest just one to start with.

Haha, that's pretty cool. Okay, well how about this, story-wise, which one is the best in your opinion? I've heard VII is the best, but I've also heard it's overrated. So a second, third, or even fourth opinion is always welcome.

You will get a Greatest Hits (or black label if you're extremely lucky) copy of Final Fantasy IX, sealed, within a week for $19.99 + shipping and handling. Final Fantasy IX is my favorite Final Fantasy after VII, so I'd suggest it even before Final Fantasy X if you want me to be honest. Amazon also has sealed copies of Final Fantasy VIII for the same price if you're interested in buying both at the same time. In my opinion, $40 + shipping for sealed copies of Final Fantasy VIII and IX is an amazing deal. If I didn't already have both of them, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. So yeah, my honest suggest is to go with IX. I'd suggest VII, but for the price that it sells for now a days, you better make sure you really like the Final Fantasy games before you pony up $70+ for it.
Thanks for the info man. VII-X it is then. :D
Thanks for the info man. VII-X it is then. :D
No problem. I'm a HUGE Final Fantasy fan, and i'm always willing to help someone make the transition into one of my favorite game franchises. Enjoy!
Try the IV, V, VI remakes for GBA.

If its Final Fantasy then it has my attention.
Yeah I love the Final Fantasies too. I own pretty much all of them but I havent beat them all yet. X was great, I beat that one. VII was amazing too. With a DS and a PS2 you can basically play all of them. Try III - VI on DS and GBA and I would also recommend VII and X.

I'll make sure to try those out too man. :)
I agree, VII-X are the excellent games... I would start with X. I adored XII, and you might like it also... I am a firm believer of encouraging others to formulate their own opinion, so try it for yourself. BTW, Final Fantasy X is the only game in the series to have a legitimate sequel in Final Fantasy X-2... I guess VII did recently on the PSP, if you want to be TECHNICAL, but X is the only one to have a second part as denoted by ''X-2''
I pretty much agree with everyone, VII and X are some of the best games ive every played. Also if you have a GBA then IV(personal favorite) and V are great older ones that are very easy to pick up.

There was also a cell phone game in Japan based on Final Fantasy VII, but I can't for the life of me recall what it's named. Unfortunately, I've not played Crisis Core and Dirge of Cerberus was a terrible game.

I did not include Dirge of Cerberus, as this was more of a spin-off with Vincente Valentine as the lead character of a completely different game. Making reference to this is kind of like saying that Elektra was the sequel to Daredevil; while they share the same character, the differences in the two are so numerous that it is a remote stretch to link the two by addressing the second as a sequel.
